Warm Up with Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Ginger-Infused Cocktails
Fall spices can take a traditional cocktail to the next level. Whether you add a stick of cinnamon as garnish, or a quick grate of fresh nutmeg on the top of a bourbon punch, adding a finishing touch of spice can transform a cocktail from blah to exciting.
Cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg are some of the most common fall spices, but we love some of the lesser-utilized spices in fall cocktails as well. Star anise looks beautiful floating in a warm drink, and infuses a lovely licoricey flavor. Take a tip from grade school pomander balls and spike an orange wedge with whole cloves for a beautiful seasonal garnish.
Here are our favorite cocktail recipes featuring the spices of the season:
Fancy Bourbon Punch
Ingredients:
- 4 Parts Maker's Mark Bourbon
- 1 Part Sugar
- 3 Lemon
- 3 Orange
- 4 Parts Tea
- 1 Part Champagne
- Nutmeg
Directions:
Peel the oranges and lemons, keeping the peels. Juice the oranges and lemons. Combine sugar and citrus peels in the bottom of a punch bowl. Muddle together until sugar starts to clump together. Let sit for about 2 hours (while not necessary, this does add a little complexity).
Brew the tea for about 30 minutes, remove loose tea or tea bags and allow to cool. Add the juice of the peeled fruit, tea and bourbon. Stir. Top with champagne just before serving and stir gently.
Top with freshly grated nutmeg and serve.
*If you can't grate fresh nutmeg, don't use the prepackaged powdered stuff. It will turn your punch into a paste. If fresh ins't possible, garnish with citrus wheels or fresh fruit.
